Municipal Election Details Announced

Walnut candidates historically have chosen to run as independents to save the town added expense of multiple election cycles.  A runoff is scheduled if necessary.  Last day to register to vote in the municipal election is noon, May 6th, 2017.  The election runs from 7a until 7p on Tuesday, June 6th.

Complete details for municipal elections may be viewed on the Mississippi Secretary of State website.  The page also provides guidelines for voting eligibility.  Click HERE to view.

Policy for Reserving Community Center Updated

Fees for the community center rental ($45.00) must be paid in full at the time the building is reserved.  Any cancellation within seven days of the planned event date will result in forfeiture of the fees.  During the holidays, several people "reserved" the facility but did not show up.  Other folks who needed to use the facility were turned away.  We hope this change in policy will benefit everyone.

2016 Christmas Parade Plans Announced (updated)

The annual Christmas parade is scheduled for Monday, December 12th at 7p.  We encourage you to register a float, vehicle or other entry for your organization.  Let's make this one of the best parades yet!  There is no registration fee, but we request all participants to provide a new, unwrapped toy in the $10 to $20 range for each entry.  These toys are distributed to children across the community whose families are currently experiencing financial difficulties.  Download an entry form by clicking HERE.   Share this info with your friends!  Thanks! (IMPORTANT UPDATE: Santa Claus will stop at City Hall to visit with all the children.  He will not proceed along the rest of the parade route, so downtown is the place to be!  Please pass this information along to everyone you know!)

Orders Still Accepted for Tippah Veterans Park Pavers

Tippah Veterans Park is asking for your support in purchasing pavers to honor Tippah Countians who have served in the U.S. Military.  4" x 8" pavers are available for $50 and 8" x 8" pavers are available for $100.  Please CLICK HERE to download the form or stop by City Hall to pick up a copy.  You will provide the veteran's name and rank, the unit in which they served and service dates.  They are also soliciting a biography and picture that will be used in a future publication of the Memorial Park Book of Memories.

BCBS Awards Walnut Additional $75,000

The Town of Walnut is honored to be given another award from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation to complement our Healthiest Hometown status.  $75,000 will be invested in three outdoor exercise equipment stations that will be installed at Walnut Elementary School, along the walking track adjacent to the tee ball field, and next to Kidz Town playground.  It is part of a program designed by BCBS to introduce children to our hometown heroes.  The Walnut Police Department will present monthly programs to children in grades K-6 at Walnut to improve their quality of life.  Topics include increased awareness of healthy lifestyles, how to stay active and fit, and how to make healthy food choices.  Support for the classes will be provided by Walnut Volunteer Fire Department.  The overall program will highlight Walnut's hometown heroes to build relations and hopefully spur an interest in community service.  Click HERE for more information on the grant application.

Commercial Development Moving Forward

We are happy to see progress being made on the new Subway, which is scheduled to open in about six weeks.  The Blue Sky Exxon facility is coming along nicely and will make its welcome return before too long.  Finally, the property at 28191 Hwy 15 has been posted for sale after months of sitting idle.  You can view the information sheet by clicking HERE.  If you know of commercial investors who would like to locate in our community, please ask them to contact City Hall or the Tippah County Development Foundation.  We're ready.

The disaster declaration qualifies citizens of Benton, Coahoma, Marshall, Quitman and Tippah counties to apply for individual assistance which provides grants for individuals and families, as well as possible low-interest loans from the Small Business Administration.

In addition, public assistance was granted for Benton, Marshall and Tippah counties for local governments and certain nonprofit organizations to offset costs like... debris removal, emergency protective measures and repairing disaster damaged facilities. Hazard mitigation has been granted statewide as well.

Residents in the declared counties may begin registering online at or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired.

We expect a temporary local office to be set up in the coming days. We will share more information as it becomes available.

Tornado Tears Through NW Tippah County

The tornado arrived just before 5 p.m. on December 23, 2015.  It devastated several communities that encompass Walnut to the West and North.  Camp Hill, Marlow, Oakland, Threeforks, and Brownfield communities were all hit hard. More than 100 homes were destroyed or damaged. Over time, those material goods will be replaced.. Meanwhile, let's commit to guarding and improving relationships.  We have a great opportunity to harness the energy expended in the recovery effort to strengthen and expedite it.  Our thoughts and prayers continue for everyone affected by the storm.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is a time for families and friends to come together and express gratitude for all the blessings we share, the freedoms we enjoy, and the loved ones who enrich our lives. The founding fathers thanked the Almighty and humbly sought His wisdom and blessing.

May we all live by that same trust today, and may God continue to watch over and bless our town, community, county, state and country. Happy Thanksgiving from the administration and staff of the Town of Walnut!
