Learning and growth.

We take pride in education and it shows. Walnut is renowned for its math and science department program. The high school student teams have faced off in many regional and state competitions and consistently bring home the win.  Besides, they are great ambassadors for our community!

The Health and Wellness Initiative is focused on improving the quality of life in our community.  Learn more about what we've done to be recognized as Mississippi's Healthiest Hometown by reading the 2015 BCBS Foundation Application.

Obesity is one of the biggest risk factors to your health that you can control and change! By losing weight, you can help lower your risk of several serious medical conditions, including:

  • Heart disease and high blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Gallbladder disease and gallstones
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Breathing problems, such as sleep apnea and complications from asthma and COPD

As a community, we have challenged ourselves to lose a total of one ton of collective body weight. 2,000 pounds lost – what an accomplishment! Letʼs work together to improve our health, be great role models for our children and raise awareness to improve the quality of life in the Walnut area!

Join us in our challenge to the entire community! Itʼs simple, quick, and completely confidential! Just send a short email to healthywalnut@comcast.net with your name and weight loss goal. Then, just update us periodically (we suggest once monthly) with your progress. We will also email helpful and encouraging tips to help you reach your goals.

The Community Involvement Task Forceʼs primary mission is to coordinate the volunteerism during community-wide events such as the Fall Festival, Christmas Parade, and others.

This Taskforce operates within a 501c3 non-profit framework and is comprised of members from all walks of life and all areas of the community. The planning of and involvement in these events are fun and often rewarding. If you are interested in participating on this team, contact the Mayor's Office.

The Walnut Youth Leadership Council is a group of high school students working toward the common purpose of developing their individual leadership skills to strengthen the Town of Walnut and its surrounding communities through volunteer service and increased communication with municipal leaders.

In short, it is an opportunity for motivated 9th – 12th graders to learn, lead, and serve within the scope of their own community.
